I was reading an article the other day about a couple that was living in a multi-million dollar home, driving luxury cars, and spending over $20,000 a month to maintain their lifestyle.
Unfortunately, this couple was buried in over 6-figures of debt (not including the mortgage) and their credit cards were maxed out.
They woke up one day completely broke and unable to pay their bills.
I read this story and immediately recognized the problem.
It wasn't a money problem, it was an "appearance" problem.
This couple had fallen for one of the oldest money myths in the book.
"You are what you look like."
But I can't blame them. I fell for this lie too.
When we get caught up in what others think of us, we end up chasing the appearance of wealth, instead of actually building any of it.
And the appearance of wealth is VERY expensive.
But I discovered that people's opinions of my finances didn't actually change the reality of my finances.
And if I shouldn't care if people think I'm wealthy when I'm not, then I also shouldn't care if people think I'm poor when I'm not.
Don't fall for the lie that you are what you look like.
If you waste your time chasing the appearance of wealth, you'll struggle to actually build any.

Have you ever confused needs vs. wants?
I was in the jungle of Panama watching several kids with barely a loin cloth for clothing play soccer on a stretch of dirt in between a handful of thatch-roofed huts.
They were laughing and running and as happy as any kid I've seen on our beautifully manicured YMCA soccer fields here at home.
The juxtaposition reminds me that most everything I already have in my life is a want.
My needs were met a loooong time ago.
Sure, I still need food, and water, and electricity is nice.
But I still buy a lot of things that aren't those items.
All wants.
But I know that if I'm not careful, I can spend my way back into poverty.
If I don't remind myself that whatever I'm buying won't change my life significantly, I'll start to get confused and think it's a need.
If I don't remember that everything I have already makes me wealthy, I'll get confused and think I need to buy more stuff to get there.
When we realize that 98% of what we buy are wants, it makes it easier if scaling back our lifestyle ever becomes a need.

I love watching my young kids because they fail do

I love watching my young kids because they fail dozens if not hundreds of times a day...and most of the time they don't even notice or care.
They call strawberries "straw babies".
They get excited to play outside and trip over their own two feet on their way to the door.
They don't understand that the friction coefficient decreases when the driveway is wet from an early morning rain so they wipe out on their scooter and tumble into the street.
When we are kids, failure is so infused into every part of our life we barely even noticed it.
But somwhere along the way, failure becomes scary and we stop trying to do new things.
We start to stick to well worn paths and skills that we've mastered so as to avoid failure at all costs.
But wasn't life more full of adventure when we were kids?
Didn't we have more fun trying and failing and learning and improving?
Perhaps it's time for us to remember what we used to know – failure does not exist where learning does.

Words of wisdom from Warren Buffett.
If we've been trying to adjust our income to meet our consumption (spending more than we make, living in debt), then making the healthy choice to do the opposite is going to be painful.
Sometimes we have to realize when we are in a season of living in a small apartment vs. a big house.
We have to realize when we are in a season of driving a $3,000 car instead of a $23,000 car.
We have to realize when we are in a season of eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at home vs. eating creamy roasted chicken at a restaurant.
Does it feel good to be in these seasons? Not really.
Are we sometimes embarrased to be in these seasons? Of course.
But we have to embrace the truth because continuing to live a lie will crush us financially, and likely in many other ways that we never expected.
Let's take an honest look at our income and give ourselves the gift of adjusting our consumption accordingly.

I was riding on a bus through Port-au-prince, Hait

I was riding on a bus through Port-au-prince, Haiti just 2 years after the devestating earthquake that crushed the city.
As we crawled along the gravely roads through a broken neighborhood I looked out the window and noticed a young boy walking beside us.
His attention was focused on a stick he had somehow fastened to a small double-wheel that came off of an umbrella stroller. (As a father of 4 kids, I can spot a stroller wheel from 50 yards.😉)
This boy was happily making his way up the street pushing his rolling stick ahead of him.
Would he have preferred a remote control car to play with? Sure.
Would he turn down the gift of a new soccer ball? Never.
Were either of those options necessary for him? Not at all.
We live in a society that clammors for more.
Bigger is better.
Faster is better.
More? Always better.
But where does that insatiable desire lead?
What do we teach our children if we ourselves are never satisfied?
Sometimes we have to look at our rolling stick and realize what we have is enough.
